A young Raglan singer has impressed The X Factor judges with his performance of the John Legend song “Ordinary People”. Reiki Ruawai, 15, son of Cornerstone Roots founders Brian and Naomi Ruawai, auditioned on Sunday in front of the judging panel in the fourth episode of the popular talent show.

After being introduced in a short video clip showing Reiki at home in Raglan, and briefly hearing from dad Brian talking about Reiki’s musical upbringing, he took to the stage and performed “Ordinary People” accompanying with his acoustic guitar.

Judge Stan Walker commented that Reiki was “like a diamond in the rough and I want to be part of that polishing”, while fellow judge Natalia Kills complimented Reiki on his voice, saying it was “like a silky velvet nightgown.” The studio audience showed their appreciation by giving Reiki a standing ovation.
The judges unanimously votes yes, meaning that Reiki next progresses to the boot camp round at Vector Arena in Auckland, where he will take part in further auditions and workshops.
