The Raglan Operational Support Unit team is out and about painting fire hydrant covers yellow so they will be easy to find when they are needed. The team will aslo be flushing the hydrants and locating any faults. Officers MacLeod and Coxhead are undertaking the work as part of a Fire Hydrant maintenance agreement with the Waikato District Council and the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade. It is expected that the work will be completed in early March.
In technical terms this means that what they will be doing is the following:
1. The location markings of fire hydrants shall be to SNZ PAS 4509:2003 New Zealand Fire Service Fire Fighting Water Supplies Code of Practice.
2. Marker posts shall be of an approved type, or such that is approved by the WDC, and be set vertically in the ground as close as practicable to the lot boundary and immediately opposite the hydrant.
3. Each post shall be firmly set to a height above ground of between 600 mm and 800 mm, and shall bear the inscribed letter H. Hydrant marker posts shall be painted yellow..
4. A yellow isosceles triangle of 600 mm side length pointing perpendicular to the hydrant shall be painted 150 mm from the centre of all sealed roads and on the kerb.
5. A blue glass-faced bi-directional reflective “cats eye” pavement markers 150 mm from the centre of the road on the side of the hydrant location.
