  • Boat ramp closure
  • Pontoon, eastern walkway and kayak ramp
  • Constructing the gangway and pontoon
  • Balustrade
  • Western walkway

Boat ramp closure

The boat ramp at the Raglan wharf was temporarily closed on Friday 3 March 2023 from 6am – 8am.

This was to allow delivery of a 12-tonne barge to site which will serve as a working platform for piling equipment. Five large piles will be driven into the water for the new gangway and pontoon. The barge was delivered to the wharf by truck and lifted into the water by crane.

Once in the water, the barge was maneuvered just beyond the existing haul out area where it will be moored until piling is complete.

Pontoon, eastern walkway and kayak ramp

In the coming weeks, construction crews will begin delivering several hundred tonnes of volcanic basalt paddock boulders to the eastern side of the wharf to construct a new sea wall.

The boat ramp will remain open while the rocks are delivered, but please be mindful of pedestrian and traffic management which will be in place to keep everyone safe. This work is expected to take around three weeks to complete.

Once the rocks are in place, the team will pour asphalt for the eastern walkway and kayak ramp, and install piles into the water for the new pontoon.

Constructing the gangway and pontoon

This is what the new pontoon will look like.

The new pontoon is now being fabricated off-site. Once completed, it will be delivered in pieces by truck to the wharf and placed by crane into the water onto the piles. WDC will let Raglanites know more about to expect when closer to the time.

The aim is to complete construction on the pontoon, eastern walkway, and kayak ramp by the end of April 2023.

Balustrade

The construction of a new balustrade which will replace the existing handrails on the dolphin pier and western and eastern sides of the wharf is now being fabricated off-site.

It is hoped complete this in the coming weeks. Then installation will take a further three weeks to complete. While this is done, the edge of the wharf will be cordoned off and the Dolphin Pier will be temporarily closed.

The Dolphin Pier will be reopened by mid-March 2023.

Western walkway

The western walkway, which will provide community with additional access to the wharf, tidal stairs and a seating area, was allocated $3.2 million as part of the Government’s Better Off funding package late last year.

WDC is currently finalising the consenting and design of the walkway and will share it with the community in the coming month.
