Meteor theatre in Hamilton has repeated last year’s successful, Trees at the Meteor, competition. The group of six people called The Raglan Lorax Crew, led by Raglan builder, Marty White won this year’s competition. They built it in the evening after surfing during the day from bits and pieces found at Raglan’s Xtreme Waste Recycling Centre. The sculpture, named as For Those Who Have Ears to Hear, was adorned with satellites and other metallic devices. It also won the Gadgetree section.
Fifty artists from around the Waikato and further a field entered, working in studios, dining rooms, lawns and garages coming up with all sorts of trees. There are trees from 6 genres exhibited – kiwiana, recycled, avant garde, pou, stencil art and new for 09 – the gadgetree. Rob Kear, another Whaingaroa artist won the Kiwiana section with an entry called Haraketree.
The exhibition closes on Saturday 19th, December.
