It looks as if Waikato District will win the booby prize for the lowest local body voter turnout in New Zealand for two elections in a row. For the Mayoral vote a total of 10,992 voters out of 42,127 sent their papers in, a miserable 26%. That’s even lower than the 30% overall vote in Waikato for 2010 (29% in 2013). With 95% of the votes counted, Allan Sanson has been relected as Mayor of Waikato based on votes from just 10% of the registered voters. He had 4418 votes while challenger Bruce Cameron came in on 2923. (As Allan got in and our predictive model was wrong, as we pledged Raglan 23 will be donating $100 to Raglan Community Radio.) Although still getting the most votes, support for Allan Sanson plunged from 5621 in 2010, down by over 1200 votes, to 4418 in 2013.
For Raglan, Clint Baddeley continues as Councillor for the Raglan Ward with 567 votes. That’s just 17% of the registered votes, but still much better than Allan Sanson’s 10%.
Long serving Whaingaroa Councillor Rodney Dixon has missed out in the new Onewhero-Te Akau Ward, with Rosemarie Costar on 568 votes, beating him on 364.
And Raglan local Dave Currie (4089 votes) missed out on his bid for the Regional Council with Peter Buckley on 4608 and Theresa Stark on 5195 being elected.

Thank you for the donation to the radio. Hamilton’s proposal for Single Transferable Voting was heavily defeated. The mayoral result shows the need for STV here. Votes for the mayoral candidates supporting devolution of powers to local community boards were 49% higher than the vote for Allan Sanson, but I don’t expect we’ll see any change.
