Time running out to sign up for Whaanga Coast wastewater scheme

Media Release: Waikato District Council, 25.10.2013

WORK GETS UNDERWAY ON WHAANGA COAST WASTEWATER SCHEME

Whaanga Coast property owners are being encouraged to sign up for the wastewater scheme as work on the 18 week project gets underway next week (Tuesday 29 October).

Waikato District Council has awarded the contract to Spartan Construction who will set up their base near the Raglan Wastewater Treatment Plant on Wainui Road. Initial construction and installation of piping will start in this area and continue along Wainui Road.

General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty says existing property owners should be reminded if they join the scheme before the end of the construction period they’ll pay a subsidised amount for their connection, but with work beginning this week they should act soon.

“We met with the contractors last week and they’re committed to completing the project in a safe and environmentally sound manner. They’re also conscious of keeping disruptions in the community to a minimum so their work will be efficient and prompt.”

Mr Harty says the contractor’s timeline includes a ‘stop work’ phase across the busy summer holiday period to avoid disrupting residents and holiday makers.

  1. I would hope that ‘completing the project in a safe and environmentally sound manner’ is a basic requirement for any work done by a Council contractor in Raglan. And also let’s hope they complete the project on time, on budget and working as promised.

  2. I see http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/9324892/Whaanga-Coast-sewerage-plan-set-to-start adds, “Confidential documents leaked to the Waikato Times earlier this year revealed the council was divided over the scheme’s merits, with some councillors questioning whether the multimillion-dollar initiative would stop sewage contaminating Whale Bay.” and says only 64 of the 110 are signed up. Silence on a bylaw to enforce a clean up on the others suggests that there may be problems with doing it. Before the option closes we should know what the bylaw is. Another example of WDC keeping its plans secret whilst bullying uninformed ratepayers.
