Te Uku based amateur photographer, Desmond Downs is exhibiting his stop-motion images at Arts Post in Hamilton until February 14. The exhibition is called, ‘Explode’. Desmond is an auto electrician and amateur photographer who enjoys “pushing the boundaries” as far as possible. He enjoys landscape photography and has a van in which he tours. He blogs about his photography on www.thephotovan.blogspot.com.
His recent work involves some knowledge in electronics and camera flash. He managed to wire up a voice activated switch to his camera flash which triggers the flash when a loud enough sound is initiated. He also managed to wire up a second flash in series with a light bulb to give a glowing filament in some of the images. Desmond says he was quite surprised by the first pictures of the water balloons bursting as he had never seen anything like them before. He’s currently working on saltpetre smoke bombs for special effects.
