A competition run by Meridian Energy, Waikato District Council, Ngati Mahanga and the Waikato Times has seen the new Te Uku Wind Farm biking and walking trail being given the name, “Pipiwharaurao Trail”. The Maori name for the shining cuckoo bird is Pipiwharurao. Legend has it that Maori hunted Pipiwharaurao in the area of the new trail on the Wharauroa Plateau. Ohaupo residents Trevor and Brenda George received the competition prize for their suggestion of “Pipiwharaurao Trail”.
The 21-kilometre trail is mainly on land owned by Maurice Vanhoutte and Tom Jowsey. The trail will open to the public in July.
