Sunny weekend overloads council detour

Sunny weather over the weekend (8-9 Oct) saw a large increase in vehicles in Raglan. The council detour along narrow county town roads (Gilmour and Stewart) meant that the route was overloaded at times.

Waikato District Council have closed Wainui Road for several weeks while a contractor lays a new pipe across Wainui Road. The closure has also meant the loss of many parking spaces in Wainui Road and in the carpark near the Fire Station. The council had also banned parking in Gilmour Street.

This forced cars wanting a parking space to use both sides of Stewart Street for parking. The same council’s untidy verges policy has limited the amount of car parking in Stewart Street as drivers can no longer park diagonally on the verges.  With cars having to park on the sealed strip, this left a narrow route for cars on this part of the detour route.

All this added up to cause an overload on the detour route. Thankfully everybody took care with their driving.
