Success story on controlling pests on Mount Karioi

Kia ora Karioi volunteers and supporters

The pest control work on Mount Karioi is succeeding.

Over the last 3 years some very dedicated volunteers set up and maintained trapping lines on a regular and casual basis – some since the work first started in 2009.

Thank you all so much – without you we couldn’t do it!

Recently a wonderful new volunteer managed to collate all the data for the volunteers (thank you Rob!) – it is presented below for each of the lines in upper Wainui and Bryant reserve.

Rob complimented all volunteers for the informative details and comments in the traps books – particularly the Blue Ridge crew!

Pretty crazy amazing / since August 2009 we have caught 363 rats, 148 mice, 5 stoats, 13 possums and 10 hedgehogs!

On top of that we have also caught 32 stoats, 27 rats and 1 mouse across Karioi Maunga – on the main track from Te Toto Gorge to Ruapuke since September 2011.

This is the third year of trapping for the volunteers on Karioi Maunga and they hope to again expand the trapping network on the mountain as funding and volunteer support allows.
