Stop a mate driving drunk….Legend

Media Release: Waikato District Council, 12 December 2014

A new drink driving road safety campaign will be launched in Waikato district this month off the back of recent national advertising ‘Stop a mate driving drunk…Legend‘.

Waikato District Council’s Road Safety Co-ordinator Megan Jolly says the campaign is timely with the new alcohol driving limits that came into effect on 1 December for those aged 20 and over.
She says it can be difficult to tell a mate not to drive but it’s important for everyone to take responsibility for road safety on our roads.

“Did you know 27% of crashes in our district involve drink driving? That’s a staggering statistic so our aim is to encourage people to be a ‘Legend”, speak up and offer alternatives to their mates for not getting behind the wheel.”

“No one wants to share the road with someone who is over the limit, so we all have to play a part by speaking up. Taking someone’s keys, offering a couch for the night or giving a lift home to someone who is over the limit can help to keep us all safer on the roads.”

Ms Jolly says the ‘Legend’ messages will be shared in a wide variety of ways with the community including social media, licenced premises and sports clubs.
