On the 21st September, Raglan Ramblers will be taking the boat to Motukokako Pt. They’ll land just below the monument and take a fairly short walk into the bush facing the wharf, which was “noted for its kowhai and puriri trees”. Please bring your lunch and boat fare.
The monument to Tuaiwa Ngatipare was erected in 1910, but toppled by a storm in 1914. It’s at the top of a 30 million year old, 40 metre high Patikirau Siltstone cliff.
Harold Wilson, whose family once leased Te Akau station and was, from 1930, chairman of Raglan County Council, “was instrumental in making Motukokako a public reserve”. Council bought the 103 acres in September 1951. Please bring your lunch and boat fare.
Walks usually start 9am, Wednesdays from Wainui Rd car park (next to Raglan Fire Station). There is no membership – the only cost is 10 cents per km to share travel costs. Details from John 825 7866. Check out Raglan Ramblers on Facebook
Each “Rambler” accepts responsibility for any accident or injury received while travelling, or walking over private property. Be prepared – carry enough food, clothing, first aid kit for emergencies and preferably a mobile phone.
