The second of two new sculptures gifted by the Board of the Raglan Kopua Holiday Park, is being installed now at Te Kopua. The first sculpture to the south of the entrance to the Holiday Park was by Raglan sculptor Richard Page. It is a depiction of a large toki with the blade pointing to the sky.
The one being installed now is by Raglan Sculptor, Tai Meuli and is in two parts with one part representing the sail of a waka. After the two sculptures are installed, the area around them will be landscaped and illuminated according to the designs prepared by the sculptors.
The two sculptures were selected as part of a public competition managed by the Old School Arts Centre. The shortlisted conceptual designs were judged by a panel from the Old School Arts Centre, the Holiday Park and the Coastal Reserves Advisory Committee led by convenor Wanda Barker and cosnisting of Jen Carbon, Amanda Watson, Colin Chung, Pablo Rickard, Rob Clark, and Linda Cole. The judges were so impressed by the designs that they decided to proceed with two sculptures.on
Holiday Park Board Chair Colin Chung says “It is extremely pleasing to see the financial surplus achieved from successfully operating the Holiday Park being able to provide these inspirational public artworks for Raglan Whaingaroa.”
