Police are continuing the search for Jack Macnicol on the west coast south of Raglan.

Jack went fishing on Saturday with family members at Papanui Point, often known as Ruapuke Rock, and was swept off the rocks by a wave.

The search effort to date has included the Police helicopter, Coastguard boats, Coastguard air support, surf lifesaving, and Waikato Police Search and Rescue group.

Family and friends have bolstered the search effort, and Police will be assessing the search on a daily basis.

The circumstances of Jack’s disappearance will be referred to the Coroner.

Police Search and Rescue teams have been searching near Raglan again today for the teenager swept off rocks on Saturday 17 November.

Police can now name the missing teenager as Jack Macnicol, aged 17, from Te Awamutu.

Jack was fishing with family members when he was swept off the rocks at around 1.30pm on Saturday.

An extensive search has been under way since then. On Saturday and Sunday, the Police Eagle helicopter, Coastguard Air Patrol, Raglan Coastguard and the Raglan Surf Club provided assistance to Police Search and Rescue teams.

Today’s search has been land-based, focused on the shoreline around Papanui Point.

We are extremely grateful to all those who have assisted our Search and Rescue teams – especially the volunteers, and family and friends of Jack, who have been helping in the search.

The search will be assessed on a daily basis going forward, depending on weather and tidal conditions.

This has been an extremely traumatic time for Jack’s family and loved ones, and I would respectfully request that media give the privacy and space that they need

Update: Raglan search

Efforts to locate the teenager swept off rocks at Papanui Point near Raglan yesterday (Saturday)  have been unsuccessful today (Sunday).

The search teams have been stood down for the day due to tidal conditions.

The search will resume again tomorrow morning (Monday), weather and tidal conditions permitting.

Today’s search has involved members of the Police Search and Rescue team, Coastguard Air Patrol and the Raglan Surf Club.

Police would like to extend our thanks to all those involved for their assistance.

Police are continuing to support the missing teenager’s family.

The search for a teenager swept off rocks at Papanui Point south west of Raglan yesterday afternoon will resume this morning, Sunday 18th November.

Police were notified around 1:30pm on Saturday  afternoon that a teenager was swept off rocks at Papanui Point. He had been in the area with three others. The 17-year-old’s family has been advised and are being supported by Police.

Police Search and Rescue, Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter have all been assisting with the search. It was suspended on Saturday evening due to the conditions.

The search teams will head out at 10am, to coincide with mid-tide for the outgoing tide, and will focus on the shoreline each side of Papanui Point.

The search includes members of the Police Search and Rescue team, Coastguard Air Patrol, and the Raglan Surf Club.

At this stage it is anticipated that the search will continue until after low tide.
