The sandcastle competition organised by KASM (Kiwis Against Sand Mining) at Kopua Beach for Anniversary Day was a BIG success with 35 entries and almost all the marked out positions were in use. KASM’s Phil McCabe said he was very pleased with the day. The entrants could either compete as family, child, team, and individual. And there was a special people’s award with the vote made by giving a gold coin donation into a special tin on each sandcastle site.   Registration started at 8.30am with the builders starting work at 9.00am and going through to 1pm, then a quick judging before the tide came in.

This was a good positive community event that provided an opportunity for KASM to get their message across.

A giant sand banner greeted people arriving from town across the footbridge. On the Domain side, participants, supporters and interested visitors crammed the entire main soccer field with cars. Raglan Maori Wardens ensured that everybody could park safely.

Waikato District Council appeared to have not anticipated the popularity of the event with rubbish bins overflowing all round Kopua.
