Although the Hamilton & Waikato Tourism Group say that the Rugby World Cup 2011
was a key focus for them for a good portion of the year, our Raglan Website poll indicates that the largest group of locals (32%) thought that Raglan had only benefited a little bit by the RWC. Local tourism operators indicate that bookings were up 10% on normal for the period. And 12% of people answering the poll said they had benefitted a great deal from the RWC.
So it seems that even the highlight of TV Broadcaster ITV Wales’ coverage of the Welsh team based in Hamilton, including going surfing in Raglan wasn’t enough to boost visitor numbers by a huge amount. Hopefully the work of international journalists here covering the games and going kayaking, surfing and mountain biking will pay off later.
