The Metservice forecast and marine report showing a southwest swell of about three metres off the Raglan coast on Wednesday 25th meant that the Eco Lab annual fishing competition for the company’s clients and invited guests was cancelled. Prizes were awarded on Wednesday night at the Raglan Club by a draw system instead of by fishing prowess.
Some fishermen decided to head out on Wednesday despite the difficult conditions on the Raglan bar. A person on one boat contacted Coastguard reporting an injury to a crew member on the boat about 11.30am. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called out. Two fishermen were rescued from the boat on the Raglan bar after they were injured in a rough bar crossing. One person on the boat suffered a broken leg from the impact.
The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter went in with a rescue swimmer and an intensive care paramedic and winched the two men to safety.
Both patients were transfered to Waikato Hospital for treatment. Two of the three men on the boat suffered moderate injuries.
