Remedial works to the main beach access track at Wainui Reserve in Raglan are scheduled to begin next week and will involve the construction of a retaining wall.
The construction is due to start on Tuesday 2 April and is expected to be completed by Friday 17 May.
The beach access track will remain open to pedestrians throughout the project however there may be some minor disruption due to the work.
Waikato District Council Acting General Manager Service Delivery Stephen Cox said the works were a result of subsidence of the track which required a retaining wall to be built to minimise the risk of a slip.
“If no work is undertaken the access track will continue to subside in the future with the potential for the track to disappear resulting in no access to the beach for emergency services.” Mr Cox said the subsidence was likely caused by “coastal erosion at the base of the slope”.
The works will involve excavation of the walkway asphalt, minor vegetation clearing, installation of retaining post and panels, followed by reinstatement of the track. The project was put out to tender with Rock Control Limited the successful contractors.
