Green Party mining spokesperson Catherine Delahunty is attending the Rally for our Ocean, an event to highlight the Government’s agenda for risky commercial exploitation of our seas, including deep sea drilling. Ms Delahunty will join speakers from KASM, Greenpeace and the Oil Free Seas Flotilla among others.

The Oil Free Seas Flotilla is departing on Monday to meet Anadarko’s drill ship as it arrives to drill an exploratory oil well in 1500 metres of water, 111 nautical miles west of Raglan. The Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico was from the drilling of an exploratory oil well in 1500 metres of water.

Speaking about the Rally for our Ocean Ms Delahunty said, “This event demonstrates that New Zealanders love and want to protect our ocean.

“New Zealanders know that deep sea drilling is not worth the risk. While there are some short-term economic benefits, they don’t justify risking a catastrophic spill that could cost us billions.”
