Rain and choppy seas for 24th Whaingaroa Hoe

In the 8km W6 Open, Novice and Junior race waka cross the inner harbour off Lorenzen Bay

A large number of waka took part in 24th Annual Whaingaroa Hoe Raglan on Saturday 19th May. While usually the paddlers get a fine today to compete, this year there was rain with choppy seas and strong winds.

The popular event hosted by Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka was based at the boat ramp, Marine Parade in Raglan Domain.

The events were:
Following a karakia at 8am, the event programme was:

9.00 am Race Start – 8km W6 Open, Novice and Junior
START outside Estuary Entrance, between Orange Buoys.

10.30 am Race Start – 24km W6 Women and Mixed
START inside Estuary off Boat ramp, between Orange Buoys

11.00 am PRIZE GIVING – Open, Novice and Junior 8km

1.00 pm Race Start – 24km W6 Men
START inside Estuary off Boat ramp, between Orange Buoys

1.15pm HIGH TIDE
3.00 pm PRIZE GIVING – Men Women and Mixed 24km
