The Raglan Harbourview Hotel’s popular seafood chowder has been featured in a new book released 8 March on Kiwi tucker. Author Pter Janssen has stood the chowder right up there with giant Pokeno ice creams, Te Kuiti carrot cake and Otorohanga hot meat sandwiches. The book is called, Great Kiwi Eats: What to Look For and Where to Find It.
Peter Janssen has travelled the length and breadth of this country as a herd tester, a sales rep, a publisher, a keen tramper and as an author researching his popular guidebooks, in the course of his varied working life. As someone with a lifelong enthusiasm for eating well and economically, he knows how to stretch a dollar and how to make sure you don’t go to bed hungry in a strange town. He knows where to find the best pies, the best seafood, the best custard squares, the best venison, the best whitebait sandwich and the best lamingtons. Name a town and he’ll tell not only tell you what culinary delights are waiting there to be discovered, and where to find them, he’ll know who makes them and along the way he’ll amuse and delight you with potted histories, memorable anecdotes and events of culinary note. Fun to read, even more fun to eat the food he’s chosen as representative of the best and make up your own mind about what makes a Great Kiwi Feed.
