Raglanites not surprised that Ngaruawahia is surprised

Raglanites are not surprised that the Ngaruawahia based Waikato District Council is surprised at the rapid deterioration of the road surface in Gilmour Street, Raglan. At the Raglan Copmmunity Board meeting held in Raglan on Tuesday 11th, WDC staff said they were surprised to hear about the damage to Gilmour St yesterday, so they’ve now taken another look.

WDC Waters Manager, Karl Pavlovich, said, “Following yesterdays RCB meeting, Council roading staff inspected Gilmour street. While Council was aware that there was some deterioration, upon inspection the issues are much more advanced that we had understood them to be. With that in mind, Council are now looking at programming a full road renewal and this will mean that our storm water upgrade will need to be bundled with this work.”

Raglanites are not surprised by this as the same thing happened when Gilmour Street was last used for a detour when Bankart Street was closed during road reconstruction.  Following that damage WDC had to do a repair job on Gilmour Street. This once again confirms that WDC has an extremely short corporate memory due to the high turnover of staff in key jobs.

Mr Pavlovich has supplied storm water project plans for Gilmour Street covering two options, estimated to cost anywhere from $329,000 to $686,700. He has supplied the draft plans that the Council currently have on the storm water upgrade. He has asked people to take a look, get together and get your thoughts down on what can be done or what you would like to have done. He added, “The design criteria and design may change now that it is part of a wider package (involving a full road renewal).
