Raglan Whaingaroa schools to miss out under new Government funding

A new Government system for funding schools means that all four Raglan Whaingaroa schools will miss out. The schools will receive less funding and be worse off as a result of the radical new funding system. Raglan Area School will get $1,904 less, with Te Uku down $1,435, Te Mata down $1,309 and Waitetuna down $970.

The Government says the new system will target funding to those students who need the most help. Critics argue the radical change will hurt some the schools and require parents to front up with more cash.

Base operations funding will not be inflation-adjusted in 2017. Instead next year schools will get $92 in extra funding for each such student from a long-term welfare-dependent background. The Ministry of Education has just confirmed how much money each school will get as a result of having at-risk students on their rolls.

However, base operations funding will not be inflation-adjusted next year.

Education Minister Hekia Parata has said that funding represents a 1 per cent increase to the $1.35 billion in grants allocated to schools.
