Raglan Water Tower becomes alive

Raglan’s water tower is now becoming alive once more after a brief period of being all white. The white undercoat is now being painted over with the brand new mural painted by local mural artist Theo Arraj. The waka hourua is interesting. Hek Busby, rekindled our knowledge of double hulled ocean going waka, so it’s great to see one on the mural. Theo is working Monday to Saturday when it isn’t raining.

Chosen from 17 artists from across the motu, Theo’s design won the hearts of the selection panel. Feedback from a community survey was used in the selection of the artist and design. All the elements identified as important to the community – wai (water), ocean, nature and people – have been incorporated into the new mural. The mural is expected to be completed before Christmas.

Funding for the project came from WEL Energy Trust, Progressive Property and Waikato District Council, and Raglan Naturally Community Trust for support with funding from the Department of Internal Affairs Community-Led Development Fund.
