The South Head Trig in Wainui Reserve, Raglan has been replaced with a new metal one. The old wooden one was damaged by strong winds in October 2010. The trig station is a landmark for walkers and swimmers on Ngarunui Beach and visitors to the Wainui Reserve.  Trig stations are an essential part of the system used by surveyors in New Zealand.  The physical component of New Zealand’s geodetic system is a network of control marks that serve as physical reference points. A number of these marks are black and white trig beacons, seen on the tops of hills, or steel pins set into concrete in urban areas. These marks are used by surveyors to determine the location of property boundaries in relation to the official geodetic datum.

The official title of the trig station in Wainui Reserve is Code: A3YA Name: 48 SOUTH HEAD. The trig station is at coordinates Latitude: 37° 48′ 38.1803″ S and Longitude: 174° 50′ 11.1649″ E.
