A large crowd of football supporters turned out to watch the Raglan Roosters take on a FIFA invitational 11 at the Domain on Saturday. Billed as the Roosters v the All Whites – sort of, the day started with a series of 5 aside games organised for the kids along with a kicking wall and the chance to win tickets to the U20 world cup which is being held in New Zealand next year.
The invitational 11 was composed of a collection of players from the Melville Club side and from the Northern league plus a couple of former All Whites including James Bannatyne who was in the 2010 All Whites World Cup Squad.
Most of the Roosters were keen to test themselves against top flight opposition but soon found themselves being cut up by the opposition who took the lead going into the halftime break.
Despite this the Roosters came back in the 2nd half an improved side and slotted home 3 goals. First up was Darfur who in the words of the ex All White keeper made him look silly with a clever move that left the goal wide open for the shot. Next Was Tim who completed a fantastic move by heading the ball home in what he describes as the highlight of his soccer career. Last up was Ben who contrived a looping header that went over the keeper and into the net.
In the end the visitors won 5-3 but the crowd and players thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was good to see a complete absence of dirty play in the match.
