An occasional column by Rodger on dining in Raglan
Raglan’s newest cafe had just opened on Thursday morning at 7am after what looked like a very late and hard Wednesday night. The new cafe has been much-anticipated and it was having a busy first day. Some ex Raglanders even returned for the day to try it out. We decided to join in the excitement of the first day so went along for lunch.
The cafe has been given a makeover with the imitation plastic wood floor pulled up to reveal a tongue groove native timber floor. The rest of the decor is bring and breezy to complement this. The counter is down one end by the entrance so the tables are away from the espresso noise. It presents a really good image.
The menu has several options in modern kiwi cafe style with the standard egg variations through to lambs fry. We both ordered the pancakes with pear and a berry compote. This combination worked well and was very tasty. The meal was served in a reasonable time in a busy situation. The coffees we had were made well and came quickly. Service was good and friendly.
The two meals and two coffees came to a total of $38, so lunch per person was just under $20. So overall I’d give the Raglan Social Club 8/10 overall in terms of value for money. Based on our experience the Raglan Social Club will be a winner.
