Christian Nicolson, Director of the award winning sci-fi comedy, This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy, will be in Raglan on Friday November 11th for the screening of his film. After the screening there will be a question and answer session with Christian.
You’ll be able to ask Christian about how they made the rickety props made from upcycled junk, the questionable special effects and the lavish homemade costumes.
This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy plays in Raglan at the Old School Arts Centre, 5 Stewart Street on Friday 11 November at 8pm. It’s already picked up several awards and screened in London, Toronto, Houston, Boston, Indianapolis, Sydney, San Francisco and Sweden.
“The biggest surprise of this year’s Boston SciFi – the audience loved it! It could easily become a breakout.” Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival.
“A wonderful film, very funny – every SF fan should see it!” – Sci-Fi London Film Festival
“It’s easily one of my favourite kiwi films ever. I actually already want to watch it again” – Karl Burnett – Shortland Street
This New Zealand-made action comedy, which tells the story of three ordinary guys thrust into the world of a B-grade 1960s space flick, was directed and produced on a shoestring budget by artist Christian Nicolson, and was a runner-up in the inaugural Make My Movie competition in 2012.
Despite missing out on first prize, Nicolson was determined to see his first feature through to completion. So he held a huge sale of his artwork, scoured Auckland’s streets for prop-making materials and started filming.
Influenced by sci-fi classics like Blake’s 7, Lost in Space and Star Trek, Nicolson’s film has the look and feel of a cult classic. And it’s been winning endless praise and awards since its release, including Best Comedy at the 41st Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival and Best Comedy Sci-Fi London 2016.
This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy screens at the Old School at 8pm on Friday 11 November, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session with filmmaker Christian Nicolson.
