When a report in the Waikato Times on the Waikato Mayoral Forum suggested that there was a unpublicised trial of smart water meters underway in Raglan, we asked Waikato District Council about it.

Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty, said:

“Waikato District Council is not trialling smart water meters in any part of the district. However, we are always interested to learn about developments in technology which could help Council deliver services and achieve business objectives more efficiently, so our discussions with potential commercial partners are considered business as usual. Because of this we are interested in WEL Networks projects which could assist us in the future .”

The questions we put to Mr Harty were:

This Waikato Times report mentions a trial of smart water meters in Raglan
connected to WEL Networks smart power meters:

“In September last year, Mr Ninnes briefed Mr Allen on WEL Networks’ progress rolling out its electricity smart meter technology, and expectations that every property in Hamilton will be connected to the company’s new network through a fully functioning WEL Networks smart box by the middle of this year.

Mr Ninnes then told Mr Allen he had just brought together a specialist team to develop a smart water meter “proof of concept” to demonstrate the smart boxes could also support water meters, feeding information directly to WEL.

He discussed a small field trial of smart water meters connected to Raglan
properties already hooked up to WEL Networks’ completed smart network.

That pitch by the company to senior council staff was in February, the documents show, with WEL Networks flying in two Australian specialists to help it to sell its “bleeding edge” water meters”

Raglan 23 asked:

Would you please provide information on the Raglan trial of smart water
meters? Making it a bit more specific:

1. Is Council currently undertaking a trial of smart water meters in Raglan?

2. Will Council be undertaking a trial of smart water meters in Raglan within the next 12 months?
