Aunty Alice’s approach is two-pronged: “Instead of the clumsy and poorly integrated literacy themes identified in most school literary curriculums (oral and written language, reading, spelling and presenting), she reduced it to these two: listening and speaking.”
According to Aunty Alice, written expression is akin to using a code to speak. She says mastering the code involves not only mastering letter-sound relationships, but also mastering spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and contractions, among other grammatical skills.
“Quality in writing will develop as a natural outcome from listening to (or reading) great models of writing, and understanding what the words mean in context,” Aunty Alice says.
The author says this new guide will demonstrate to school teachers how to assess literacy readiness at all levels and help students reach their full language potential.
