Construction will start soon on a new main sewer in Raglan. Richard Bax, General Manager Water & Facilities at Waikato District Council said, “The project is to replace the old Asbestos Cement (AC) pressure wastewater pipe that is in poor condition from the Nero St pump station. The new one will be more reliable and will have increased capacity for the future.” The project known as the ‘Nero Street Wastewater Rising Main Renewal’ will run from just behind the Coast Guard Shed at the end of Wi Neera Street to Wainui Road, then along Wainui Road in front of the museum site, crossing over at Helen Place, then continuing along Wainui Road and the Opotoru Bridge, then crossing into Marine Parade, where it will join up with the existing main sewer. It is expected that the project will be completed by the 30th March 2011.
The project is being undertaken by the Waikato District Council as a key project in the 2010/11 Annual Plan. The Council had budgeted $505,339 for the project, but it is only expected to cost $450,952. HEB Construction were awarded the tender for building the sewer. Local Raglan company, Sayer Drainage had their bid disqualified by the Council.
Waikato District Council have not said why they have named the project after the old name for Wi Neera Street.
