MOUNTAIN DREAMING ARTS WORKSHOP SUMMER SCHOOL IN CLAY

MOUNTAIN DREAMING ARTS WORKSHOP is hosting a SUMMER SCHOOL IN CLAY with

  • MANOS NATHAN: THE WHAKAPAPA OF CLAY, WATER & FIRE
  • SUSAN FLIGHT: AN OTHERWORLD JOURNEY IN CLAY
  • WITH LECTURE AND DEMONSTRATION BY JOHN CHARTERIS AND ROBYN LLOYD

MANOS NATHAN: THE WHAKAPAPA OF CLAY WATER & FIRE
The journey of a Maori clay worker, and a sharing of perspectives and techniques. The course will include handbuilding masks and vessel forms through the use of coil, slab and press moulds.
Maori derived designs, and/or images arising from the natural environment will be carved at leather hard stage.  These may be fired on site, or finished to a ready- to- fire stage. On site firing will feature the building and firing of a turf kiln. There will be a power point presentation of the artist’s work and discussion on the principals and ideas underpinning the work of Maori clayworkers. This course is suited to all.
MANOS has since the mid 1980’s been associated with the developmentof the Maori ceramic movement in Aotearoa. He is the co founder of Nga Kaihanga Uku the Maori Clayworkers organisation.
His work with clay emerged from a background of wood carving and sculpture. He draws on the rich heritage of the customary art forms, and on the Maori cosmological and creation narratives.
A Fulbright Award in 1989 led to a visit to the Pueblo and Hopi potters of south west U.S.A. This was followed by cultural exchanges with indigenous peoples of the Pacific, the U.S.A.,Canada, Australia, and Japan.

SUSAN FLIGHT: AN OTHERWORLD JOURNEY IN CLAY
A light hearted course exploring a world of creatures and people, and their interrelationships.
Whether the images are realistic, symbolic, or arise from legends, there will be no limit to the invention…
Handbuilding processes will be used, and as part of the exploration of sculptural approaches, problems of engineering, such as stability and off balance forms, will be discussed. This otherworld journey will include design of colour suitable to the theme, and the use of slip and underglaze hues.
Small models may be made for primitive firing on site.  This course is suited to all with a sense of fun, and a no-holds-barred approach to clay SUSAN has returned to Raglan after 14 years in Queensland, Australia to establish Mountain Dreaming Arts Workshop. She brings with her a Queensland love of colour and lighthearted fun,and wide artistic experience.  Susan is both an experienced tutor, and an adventurous exhibiting artist, having presented more than 40 solo shows in N.Z., Oz. and elsewhere.  She has been fortunate enough to receive 3 study grants for work overseas.  She has a B.A.[N.Z.] and Advanced Diploma Ceramics [Australia]

JOHN CHARTERIS: SEMINAR AND DISCUSSION
The natural world of the Raglan and Aotea and Kawhia areas, with some history.  JOHN has studied earth sciences and education, and is an inspired teacher.  He has worked as an advisor to teachers in this area- mainly through field studies.  He enjoys developing a “sense of place” for local landscapes through interpretation of observable local geographical features.

ROBYN LLOYD: HARAKEKE AND THE HANDBUILT FORM
A demonstration of the integration of weaving with Robyn’s burnished vessels. ROBYN was born in Rotorua, but spent some of her childhood in Ethiopia. From her experiences there, comes her love of handbuilt vessels, burnishing, and all forms of primitive firing. She enjoys using natural fibres to enhance her pots, creating pieces that carry an essence of Aotearoa.
She gained a Diploma Ceramic Arts in 2008,and works from her studio in TeMata. Note: This seminar and demonstration are for all enrolled on Manos’s or Susan’s course.
