More time needed to complete council sewage project in Raglan West

Nihinihi Ave may be closed for another month.

Back in February, Waikato District Council contractor, Spartan Construction started work on the Nihinhi Avenue sewage holding tank project. WDC advertised a road closure for Nihinihi Ave. between 1 Nihinihi Ave and 12 Marine Parade from Monday 15 February 2016 to 15 April 2016.

The $289,000 project to install sewage holding tanks was due for completion on the 15th April. A month into the project the Council announced  a major issue at the Marine Parade Pump station on Friday 25th March saying the main inlet pipe to the pump station had collapsed. As a result of this untreated wastewater entered the Harbour. A boating, swimming and seafood gathering ban was put in place. These were all lifted progressively by the end of  April.

As the project was not complete by the planned date of 15th April, I asked WDC about this. “The installation of the sewage holding tanks in Marine Parade, Raglan is still not complete. Does council have a new target date for completing this small project?”

“While some may consider this to be a small project, it has certainly been complex.” Tim Harty

Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty said, “Council’s latest programme from the contractor shows a final completion date of 26 May. Sheet pile removal should be starting on 3rd May. Once that is complete the electrical works, commissioning and road reinstatement can be completed. This project has included a deep excavation beside Raglan Harbour. While some may consider this to be a small project, it has certainly been complex.”
