Meteor above Raglan

Raglan residents heard and saw a meteor in the sky last night. At 11.20pm a flashing light was seen in the sky and a sonic boom which disturbed dogs was heard by many people around Raglan.  Experts say it could have been as small as a bag of sugar or as a big as a desk.
A report on the weatherwatch website described a very bright blue light which lit up the sky.  “It lit up the whole area like it was daylight and towards the end of its flight it crumbled and left a fiery trail,”

Wellington’s Carter Observatory says the object made a sonic boom as it passed through Earth’s atmosphere.  It says the object travelled south to north up the country, indicating it could be space junk, as meteorites usually travel east to west.

People who saw the lights, or filmed them, are asked fill in a fireball report on the Royal Astronomical Society’s website.
