May Movie at the Old School: The Salt of the Earth
Saturday 16 May, 8pm and Sunday 17 May, 4.30pm.

The life and work of Brazilian photographer
Sebastião Salgado. – Image supplied

Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado’s career has taken him to some of the world’s most hostile environments: the burning oil fields of Kuwait in the wake of Desert Storm, famine-sticken Ethiopia and mid-90s Rwanda. Now 70, Salgado has his own life story told by the combined talents of his son Juliano and Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club, Pina).

“Long recognized as one of the camera’s great artists, Salgado’s sculptural use of light and space is combined with a deep empathy for the human condition, resulting in richly complex black and white images that capture the dignity within every subject. Salt guides the viewer on a visual odyssey through the photographer’s career, enriched by Wenders’ monochrome footage and Salgado Jr’s color.” Jay Weissberg, Variety.
