Long Street roadworks halted by mud

Contractors missing from muddy conditions in Park Drive and Long Street on Friday

Over the last few weeks, another Waikato District Council project has been underway in Raglan. Base Civil contractors have been working on roads and storm water drains in Long Street and Park Drive. That work came to an abrupt halt on Thursday when torrential rain saw a torrent of muddy water streaming down Long Street and into storm water drains in Park Drive. An absence of sediment control ponds and Base Civil continuing to press on with their work during the downpour meant there was a good quantity of muddy water going into the harbour via the storm water pipes.
Both EW and WDC investigated the situation and sediment control systems are in place. Today, Friday, the contractors were not onsite. Fred Lichtwark of Whaingaroa Harbourcare alerted the authorities of the problem. He said, “I’m pleased that all of the other many projects underway in Raglan have adequate sediment control systems in place. It is disappointing that the Long St project had none.”  It is not known when work will recommence on the Long St roadworks project.  The work certainly needs doing as Long Street is one of Raglan’s original narrow county town roads.
