Raglan Coastguard will be running their popular bar crossing education day next month with the support of Waikato Regional Council’s harbourmasters office.

The course is being held at the Raglan Bowling Club on the corner of Wallis and James streets on Sunday, 16 March from 8.30am.

The cost is $30 for people who pre-pay or $35 cash on the day. Attendees need to bring a lifejacket with them, as a trip out to the bar is included.

“There were two incidents on the Raglan bar last month which demonstrated how even the most prudent boaties can get caught out carrying out this high risk activity,” said the regional council’s Raglan harbourmaster, Kim McKenzie.

“The west coast can be especially unforgiving which makes it important for any skipper who wants to know how to cross the bar safely to attend this course.

“The skills and know-how picked up on the day could save your life, and the lives of your friends and family,” Mr McKenzie said.

Mr McKenzie will be in attendance on the day and will be able to talk about the bylaw introduced last year which makes it compulsory to wear lifejackets in vessels under 6 metres and in vessels of all sizes when crossing a bar.

Course numbers are limited, so pre-register by calling the Coastguard secretary Brigid Green on 07 825 8089 or email raglancoastguard@gmail.com.

Safety guidelines to follow when crossing a bar are available on Waikato Regional Council’s website: www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/barcrossing.
