Last call for fire fighter

By Rodger Gallagher

Neville Meekings

It was the last call on Friday for Neville Meekings when Raglan’s fire fighters honoured him after his funeral with a drive round Raglan’s streets with sirens going.  Neville passed away on 8 March and his funeral was held on Friday 15th March 2103 in an overflowing Union Church.

During the service the community heard how he had raised his family in Government Rd Raglan and carried out many key community roles. Until 1975 he ran the Majestic Cinema in the Raglan Town Hall and for many years he operated a grocery shop in Bow St.  A foundation member of the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade he continued in the brigade in active roles for 37 years and was made a life member of the brigade when he retired.  He followed his wife onto the Raglan Community Arts Council and was made a life member of the Council.

He was also a founding member of Raglan Lions Club in 1972 and an active member for many years.

I’ll remember Neville as a true gentleman and always having a twinkle in his eye.
