160522_WDC_4108-libraries-matariki-competition-image.tmb-lgTime is running out for artists living in or connected with the Waikato District to enter their works in the Waikato District Council’s ‘travelling suitcase’ art exhibition.  The exhibition is part of the Council’s local celebrations for Matariki (the Maaori New Year).

A number of works have already been received, however, the closing date for entries has now been extended by an extra week. The extension aims to assist any artists who need more time to complete their works so they don’t miss out on the exhibition opportunity. Entries now need to be in by 5.00 pm on Tuesday, 21 June.

A ‘travelling suitcase’ exhibition is one which features artworks which can easily travel from place to place. To be eligible for the exhibition, the works have to apply either traditional Maaori arts and crafts methods or contemporary modern methods. Each artwork also needs to embrace and demonstrate what the Maaori New Year means to each artist and it must have been created within the last 12 months.

Artworks accepted as suitable for the exhibition will be showcased at a range of Waikato District Council venues later in June and through into July. The works can use any medium, for example, metal, wood, clay, textiles, fibre, or paints. They can be paintings and sculptures, installations, jewellery or wearable art – as long at the artwork fits into a suitcase and meets the other exhibition criteria.

For entry forms and further information about the exhibition, phone or email Lianne Van Dem Bend: 07 824 5732 and Lianne.VanDemBend@waidc.govt.nz.  Entry forms are also available from the Council’s district offices. A separate entry form is required for each entry.
