Jan 25: Ramblers to visit Karakariki Reserve on the Waipa

The Waipa is the Waikato’s largest tributary. The ramblers will be walking there and in some of the kahikatea bush in the middle distance. In the 1850s a native school was founded here and one of the best routes from Raglan met the river boats here. Image – John Lawson

Raglan Ramblers have had a change of plan for Wednesday 25 January from the planned Te Kowhai ramble. Instead they’ll be going to a section of the Waipa River.

The walk will partly be on DoC’s Karakariki Reserve (see http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/waikato/places/karakariki-scenic-reserve/tracks/karakariki-track/) and partly on farmland beside the River Waipa. The walk includes swing bridges, waterfalls (a good place to bathe if it’s a warm day), lakes, kahikatea bush, a stretch alongside the Waipa and we’ll probably find some fossils. Bring lunch and, if it’s warm, togs.
Walks usually start 9am, Wednesdays from Wainui Rd car park (next to Raglan Fire Station). There is no membership – the only cost is 10 cents per km to share travel costs. Details from John 825 7866. Check out Raglan Ramblers on Facebook

Each “Rambler” accepts responsibility for any accident or injury received while travelling, or walking over private property. Be prepared – carry enough food, clothing, first aid kit for emergencies and preferably a mobile phone.
