Hot Roast Shop to become liquor store?

An official notice in the window of the old Raglan Hot Roast Shop in Wallis Street indicates that the shop may soon become a liquor store.  The application notice states that R Regnier and G Teece have applied for a license to operate a seven-day a week liquor store at 4 Wallis Street.  The proposed hours of operation are 11am to 10pm.

The first publication of the notice was on 16th December 2011.  Objections must be lodged within 10 working days of this date.   With four days of holidays that works out to be 4th January 2012 as the last day to make an objection.

  1. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, to whom do we address our objections. Raglan already has more than its fair share of pokie machines according and more than enough liquor outlets including the supermarket for our small population.

  2. Objections and submissions should be made to Waikato District Council- the Raglan office should have the required form, otherwise phone their Ngaruawhia office and ask for Cindy Norris.

  3. What the hell are we thinking as a community ??? There is not a day that goes by when we dont read or feel the effects of liquor in the community .
I for one will be sending an objection to this and I encourage everyone else who has witness the raise of problems related to liquor to do the same.
We have five wholesale outlets in this town and nine establishments were you can purchase liquor already surely this is enough?
Raglan needs another liquor store like Christchurch needs another aftershook .

    .

  4. As usual the council website is not very helpful in giving guidance on objections, but http://hamilton.co.nz/page/pageid/2145842093 sets out the rules for Hamilton and http://www.ahw.org.nz/resources/Fact%20Sheet/Fact%20Sheet-Comm%20Objections.pdf confirms the problems, especially since the 1989 amendment. It seems there’s not many grounds for objection and not much note need be taken of anyone living some distance away. Maybe we need to talk to our MP about changing the legislation?

  5. Please note that the Sale of Liquor Act 1989 does not consider the dates 20 Dec to 15 Jan as ‘working days’. As the first public notification in the Waikato Times was published on 19 Dec the ‘working days’ do not commence until 16 Jan, therefore should you wish to submit an objection you have until 27 Jan.

The comment regarding the council’s website has been noted and we agree it could be improved. However in the meantime should you wish to look at the legislation sections 32 and 35(1) of the Act are the relevant ones and may be found on the NZ legislation website. NB there are currently four wholesale outlets in Raglan not five.
