Friends of Wainui is having a special work-day from 10.30am on Sunday 19 May to prepare for new tree planting. Please bring a spade and join us!
The Friends look after the 10 hectare reserve, either side of the Wainui Stream, just beyond the Harbour Care nursery on Wainui Rd. This former farm, which is part of the 140 hectare council reserve, has had about 15,000 trees planted since 1993. The new planting will fill in the remaining gaps.
More weekend work days will be run to plant the new trees, add to the labels which identify many of the native trees and to improve the signposting of tracks. Work teams from Friends of Wainui tackle a variety of jobs every couple of weeks on Monday mornings. The main work is mowing the lawns and tracks, trimming the vegetation beside the tracks, cleaning the ornamental pond and keeping weeds and animal pests under control.
