Fred Lichtwark of Whaingaroa Harbourcare will be speaking, ‘On Restoring Fisheries’ in Hastings in late June. With a growing focus by urban people, marae and farmers on better care of waterways and restoration of fisheries, a special speaker Fred Lichtwark, has been invited to Hawke’s Bay to share his experience and inspiration.
Fred is a third generation farmer and a fisherman who was a driving force behind the Whaingaroa Harbour Care Project in Raglan. The work of the Harbour Care project has featured in the documentaries ‘NZ Exposed’ and ‘Water Whisperers Tangaroa’. In 1996 a grant from the Ministry for the Environment supported the Whaingaroa Harbour Care group’s activities which included fencing off hundreds of kilometres of riparian margins and planting over a half a million native plants. Success is evident in the clearer waters and the return of shellfish and fish stocks to the harbour.
Fred will be speaking on Saturday, June 18 2011 at Lindisfarne Auditorium, 600 Pakowhai Road in Hastings. Doors open at 1.15pm and admission is by a gold coin entry at the door.
Fred Lichtwark has been sponsored to the region by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and Operation Patiki, a project to restore flounder habitats which is supported by Matahiwi, Kohupatiki, Omahu and Ruahapia Marae.
“Fred has has a lot to share with a good number of Hawke’s Bay groups and organisations who are working hard to improve fisheries and water quality, and he’s a well respected and inspirational speaker on integrated catchment management,” said Anita Murrell, Community Engagement Advisor with Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.
Anita says there will also be an opportunity for people who are interested in improving fishing, planting waterways and enhancing the environment to network with Fred and various local organisations involved in catchment restoration over afternoon tea following Fred’s presentation.
