Habitat for Humanity Central North Island is now well into building its first home in Raglan.  After a slow start while resource consent issues were sorted out, the frame is now up.

Whaingaroa Affordable Housing Trust (WAHT) is partnering with Habitat for Humanity Central North Island (CNI) on this project. Habitat responded to an invitation from WAHT, by reaching out a hand and saying “Let’s work together.”

Volunteers and builders have joined forces to build Raglan’s first Habitat home on the corner of Main Rd and Cross St. The volunteers work side-by-side with the Raglan family that will move into the house after its completion.

It’s a hand up, not a hand out. Habitat’s rent-then-buy scheme offers the Raglan family an opportunity to work towards homeownership on an affordable basis. “A simple, decent home is the foundation for a better life,” said Nic Greene, General Manager of Habitat CNI.

Habitat works in partnership with a range of organisations including those having links in the local community. The aim of Habitat is to eliminate substandard housing and work towards a world where everyone has a decent place to live. WAHT has seen that many baches in Raglan are cold, damp, and hard to heat in winter, yet a number are rented year round. Hence the partnership.
