Whisky Galore – A True Story
A community unites putting itself against officialdom and authority.
This comedy romance tells the story of what happened when a ship full of whisky ran aground on a remote Scottish Island in 1941 during the Second World War.
The SS Politician was an 8000-ton cargo ship sailing for Kingston, Jamaica and New Orleans with a cargo including 28,000 cases of malt whisky. On 5 February 1941, during gale force winds, she ran aground off the Island of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides.
And there she was, lying battered by mountainous seas from the south-east, stern-on to the wind and facing the Uist coastline, waiting for the islanders.
“What makes the film so pleasurable is the humour and lyricism with which it tells its rousing story of whisky-loving small timers coming together together to keep officialdom at bay.” The Independent ****
“Once the search for the smugglers ill-gotten gains begins, this alcohol-fuelled farce starts to catch alight.” Stuff ***
