John Lawson, secretary of Whaingaroa Environmental Defence says that , a couple of meetings in the next week will cover planning to 2070 and the sewage works. Both meetings are at Raglan House, 43 Bow Street.
- From 10am on Saturday (23rd) in the basement of Raglan House Waikato District Council growth and economic development strategy, Waikato 2070. If we get there at 10 and form a circle of chairs, we could convert the drop-in to a meeting and ask questions like why the map shows the main road as diverted to Gilmour St and how they think 8,500 people will be living here by 2070. I’ve started drafting a WED submission to it. Please suggest improvements.
- At 6.30pm on Wednesday (27th) in the basement of Raglan House, council will explain why they’re applying for a 3 year delay in the sewage upgrade. WED has asked if they plan to include installation of the tertiary membrane, which was originally planned for last year, when council was saying, “Project was largely on hold during 2017/18 to ensure any proposed solution was in keeping with changes that may occur as part of the upcoming resource consent renewal. Decision has recently been made to design and built a tertiary membrane in 2018/19 allowing compliance achievability and supporting any additional mitigation necessary for the 2021 renewal.” Council has had since 2005 to plan for this upgrade and still often fails to meet the consent conditions set in 2005.
The Boundary Review proposes keeping Taranaki-King Country constituency unchanged. It still doesn’t fit the criteria, which are communities of interest, roads and bridges that link communities, mountains and rivers in common and the population is 2.2% lower than average and will be 3.5% lower by 2023. We failed last time we tried to appeal. Should WED try another appeal?
The next Global Climate Strike is on Friday 29 November. There’s talk of organising a short bike ride to somewhere in town. Look out for publicity, or ask me. How else might the day be marked?
Hope to see you on Saturday, Wednesday and a week tomorrow.
Thanks John.
