Waikato District Council General Manager, Strategy and Support, Tony Whittaker says the population of the Waikato District is expected to double in the next 50 years.

“This growth will impact on a number of factors including the environment, infrastructure and the patterns of settlement so it needs to be well managed and sustainable for current and future generations.

“Safeguarding the potential of our rural land means some tightening of the District Plan rules for subdivision and development in rural areas needs to be considered” he said.

Council is holding a number of open days to discuss these changes with the community and to give the opportunity for feedback and suggestions on how Waikato’s rural areas should be managed.
