Waikato Regional Council says it’s a great sign that about 70 people attended a Coastguard course last Sunday on crossing the notorious Raglan bar.
“It’s really heartening for us to see so many people turning up to get the skills they need to keep themselves and others safe at sea,” says Nicole Botherway, the navigation safety manager at the council, which provides support to the Coastguard courses.
“The Coastguard is planning more courses over summer and further into next year, not only for Raglan, but also at Matarangi and Tairua.
“Two recent serious boat tipping incidents on the Tairua bar highlight just how dangerous these sorts of places can be.”

Mrs Botherway reiterated a number of messages to help boaties keep safe over the busy summer season:
- Always carry some form of waterproof communication
- Follow all navigation safety rules (these are available online at www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/navigation or by calling Kim Parker on 0800 800 401
- Use lifejackets at all times
- Keep up to date with weather conditions and information about how to cope with local hazards
- Do boating safety courses, such as bar crossing courses, or courses through Coastguard Boating Education (www.boatingeducation.org.nz).
