Whaingaroa Youth Movement presents Sign of the Times, our 16th annual dance theatre production. We are a group of almost 70 local children aged between 5-18 years. “We are about being together; to dance, create and explore ideas collectively. Our performance work is about who we are, where we live and how we see the world.”
The past moulds our world and music from every era continues to elevate and enrich our social conscience. Whether our grandparents and parents like it or not, pop culture pushes the world forward in some way. When older generations feel uncomfortable about what sparks us as young people, its yet another time to recognise newness and know that its us exploring the edge of expression and our own uniqueness. Just as it has always been before.
We want to know there is real power in our choices. We are making our own history as we push into our future, we strive to make good choices as we step into each new day. Sign of the times is about having our messages heard. Mixing up past and present into a future we can’t see clearly yet. It’s about making space for whats important and knowing we are all together on this crazy ride.
Come together, dance it out!
Directed by Patti Mitchley with set design by Si Willisson. Music by Elvis, Madonna, The Beatles, Cyndi Lauper and more greats. We visit the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and deliver our messages in real time.
