Crews work from each end to clear Whaanga Road – will take till end of week

Slips and dropouts on roads in and around Raglan have stopped and restricted access for Raglanites.

On the Whaanga Road crews from the Waikato District Alliance are working from both ends to clear slips to allow access for residents. It is expected that this will take most of the week.

Spirit Level shows magnitude of drop out on SH 23 – Image supplied

On the main road to Raglan (State highway 23) , there has been a drop out west of Glen Tui Lane. This has reduced the safe road area to one lane. Waka Kotahi says that they have 24/7 stop/go traffic management with traffic lights in place until further notice. So pass this area with care and expect delays. Waka Kotahi has also advised that people should be prepared for SH23 to be closed on the Divvy at short notice.

Update 01.02.23

There is cracking and serious slumping on the road west of Glentui Lane, which has worsened overnight.

Stop/Go traffic management is in place until further notice. Avoid unnecessary travel if you can. If you must travel, expect delays.

From 10am this morning traffic management will allow temporary works to widen the road and move the live lane further away from the problem area. As well as cold mix asphalt being applied to the cracks, an asphalt bund will be added to direct road water flow away in an effort to prevent further damage.

This is an evolving situation and Waka Kotahi is actively monitoring the site in an effort to keep the road open, to one lane, for as long as possible.

There are alternative routes available, however caution is advised as they are tight, winding roads.

The dropout on Raglan’s Cambrae is continuing to erode and while each end of the road is open to residents, it is closed to through traffic. Waikato District Alliance inspected the dropout yesterday and say they are now making a plan to secure the slip face so that the watermain under the road surface is not compromised. (WDA will seek approval to construct timber retaining wall.)

The full list of the major road works happening in the Waikato District due to the Auckland Anniversary Severe Weather Event is shown below. There is also a list of roads closed and roads affected (still open but under traffic management). Please phone 0800492452 to report any road issues which aren’t included on this list.
